Chasing Sunsets on the Norfolk Coast: Where to Find the Best Views

There’s something soul‑stirring about watching the sky shift and soften as the sun sets. Norfolk might not be known for classic over‑the‑water sunsets, but that doesn’t mean the county is short on breathtaking evening skies — you just need to know where to look.

One of the greatest joys of living here is heading out for long dog walks as day fades into night. Golden reflections on the marshes, soft light across the dunes, and those rare west‑facing sunset spots… every evening wander reminds us how lucky we are to call Norfolk home.

Here are just a couple of our favourites

Snettisham Beach: Norfolk’s West‑Facing Sunset Secret

If you’re searching for a true over‑the‑water sunset in Norfolk, Snettisham Beach is the place to be. Unlike most of the coastline, Snettisham faces west — a fact that confused me for ages, considering it sits on the east coast — but it’s exactly why the sunsets here are extraordinary.

Why Snettisham’s Sunset Is So Special

  • Uninterrupted views over the Wash — every tide gives the beach a different mood.

  • Quiet, unspoiled surroundings — perfect for peaceful evening dog walks.

  • Birdlife settling in for the night — magical to watch during spring and summer.

  • Perfect picnic spot — or grab fish & chips from the brilliant Snettisham Beach Fish & Chip Shop (open Wed–Sun and famously busy).

  • Easy access — the car park sits right beside the beach, with a few coveted spots where locals park directly on the shingle.

For those who know me, you’ll know I adore a sunset — and there’s nothing quite like sitting on Snettisham Beach after a long dog walk, watching the sky melt into warm hues. It fills your soul in a way only Norfolk can.

Other Stunning Norfolk Sunsets

Even though most Norfolk beaches face east, you can still witness jaw-dropping evening light at these spots here are my favourites so far:

Brancaster Beach: Fiery Skies & Marshland Magic

Even though Brancaster faces east, the evening light here is incredible. On the right night, the wide‑open skies glow in shades of pink, orange and gold, reflecting beautifully across the marshes.

Why Brancaster Is a Sunset Favourite

  • Huge skies that catch every colour of the evening.

  • Golden marsh reflections that make the landscape feel otherworldly.

  • Peaceful surroundings — just you, your dog, and the shifting sky.

  • Winter magic — geese flying in to settle for the night, noisy and spectacular.

There’s a car park close by, but if you stay until dusk, bring a torch — there’s no lighting on the path or in the car park and it gets dark!

Wells‑next‑the‑Sea: Soft Golden Light Across the Harbour & Dunes

Wells is beautiful at any time of day, but sunset at Wells‑next‑the‑Sea has its own quiet charm. The harbour glows, the dunes soften, and the vast sandy beach takes on a warm, golden haze.

Why Wells Is Lovely at Sunset

  • Harbour reflections that shimmer as the light fades.

  • Wide sandy beach perfect for an evening stroll.

  • Dune views that feel almost cinematic.

  • Peaceful atmosphere — especially outside peak season.

The beach car park stays open until 9pm from April to October, so you can park up, wander across to the dunes, and watch the sky shift in complete calm.

Final Thoughts

Walking our dog through Norfolk’s ever‑changing landscapes at sunset reminds us just how lucky we are to live here. Whether it’s watching the sun sink into the sea at Snettisham, soaking in marsh reflections at Brancaster, or strolling through the glowing dunes at Wells‑next‑the‑Sea, Norfolk’s sunsets are always worth chasing.

And the best part? There’s always another hidden gem waiting to be found — and we can’t wait to discover more.
