Magical Medieval start

Castle Acre is one of those places where you arrive, look around, and instantly think, “Yep, this is going to be a good walk.”

You’ve got:

  • The Bailey Gate, standing proudly like the village bouncer from the 1200s

  • The dramatic Castle Acre Castle earthworks (Free Access)

  • Pretty flint cottages and quiet lanes

  • You also have Castle Priory which is a beautifully preserved medieval monastery

  • Free parking around the green

  • Tearoom & Pub in the village for refreshment stop

It’s the perfect launch point for a day of exploring.

The walk starts from the village and you need to follow the blue markers which are plentiful so no need to get lost!

River Nar bliss — meadows, boardwalks & woodland colour

At the beginning of this walk the path leads you gently out of the village and straight into some of the most peaceful scenery in West Norfolk.

You’ll wander along:

  • The clear chalk stream of the River Nar

  • Flood meadows buzzing with wildlife

  • Woodland paths that especially glow in autumn

  • A charming boardwalk and two little footbridges

  • Views of an old mill house

The route is very easy to follow — well‑signed, well‑trodden, and perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to keep checking a map every five minutes.

And yes, there are plenty of places to stop, whether you’re grabbing a photo, letting the dog paddle, or just enjoying the quiet.

The West Acre Rewilding Project — A Wild, Natural Highlight

As you continue towards West Acre, the landscape subtly shifts — and suddenly you’re walking through part of the West Acre Rewilding Project, a brilliant local initiative focused on restoring natural habitats and boosting biodiversity.

Here you’ll notice:

  • More wildflower meadows buzzing with insects

  • Areas left to grow naturally, creating a richer habitat

  • Increased birdlife and wildlife activity

  • A more “wild Norfolk” feel compared to the farmland sections

It’s a lovely contrast on the walk and adds a sense of purpose — you’re literally walking through a landscape being brought back to life.

Dogs love this section too: lots of new scents, soft ground and open space. Just keep them close where wildlife is active.

A perfect halfway reward — The Stag Inn

The Stag Inn is roughly halfway around the loop, you reach West Acre common, where you are close to a brilliant dog‑friendly pub — ideal for a mid‑walk drink or snack.

This route converges with the West Acre Way and Nar Valley Way as you pass through

It’s a lovely little pause point before you continue the loop back toward Castle Acre. Dogs are welcome, and the outdoor seating is perfect on a warm day.

Crossing Farmland from West Acre Towards South Acre

After leaving the rewilding area, the route opens out into classic Norfolk farmland as you head towards South Acre.

This stretch gives you:

  • Wide, open views across rolling fields

  • Easy, well‑marked tracks

  • A peaceful, rural feel

  • Plenty of space for dogs to wander safely

It’s a lovely transition between the wilder rewilding landscape and the historic heart of Castle Acre. The paths remain very easy to follow, and the big‑sky scenery is perfect for photos.

The Priory — a showstopper on the return

As you loop back toward Castle Acre, the landscape opens up and suddenly — boom — the Castle Acre Priory appears.

Huge arches. Towering walls. A proper medieval moment.

Even from the footpath, the view is spectacular. It’s one of those places where you stop without meaning to.

It’s one of the highlights of the whole walk.

This is owned by English Heritage and has a cost to enter but it is quite a magical place so worth the stop and explore.

End Your Walk with a Treat — Tea Room or Pub

Because the route is fully circular, you can start or finish wherever you like — which means you can reward yourself at either:

  • Castle Acre Tea Room — homemade cakes, light lunches, dog‑friendly outdoor seating

  • The Ostrich Inn — a cosy, historic pub with great food and a warm welcome

Cake or pint — both excellent choices.

Why This Is One of the Best Dog‑Friendly Walks in Norfolk

Dogs absolutely love this route because it offers:

  • Long stretches of safe off‑lead walking

  • Soft ground that’s gentle on paws

  • Woodland, meadow and riverside sniffs

  • Water access for paddling

  • Easy terrain suitable for all ages (where the right shoes for muddier moments).

It’s a brilliant choice whether you’ve got a lively pup or a slower senior dog.

Final Thoughts

The Castle Acre Circular Walk is everything Norfolk does best: peaceful rivers, open countryside, ancient ruins and a village full of charm. Add in a halfway pub, easy paths and a dog who’ll sleep like a log afterwards, and you’ve got the perfect Norfolk Tails adventure.
