Starting in Holt Country Park

Holt Country Park is one of those places that instantly feels calming. Tall pines, soft woodland paths and filtered light make it perfect for a dog friendly with the family. There are five waymarked trails, each offering something a little different, so you can keep it short or link a few together for a longer loop. All loops start from the car park.

Along the way, you’ll find wooden sculptures tucked between the trees this is perfect for keeping kids and adults alike entertained — including the much‑loved Neil the Snail, who has become a Norfolk Tails favourite. Clemmie gave him a cautious sniff before deciding he was harmless.

Nature Trails for All Ages

One of the loveliest things about Holt Country Park is how every path has something interesting to discover. From carved woodland creatures to hidden viewpoints, the trails are designed to keep you engaged with nature at every turn.

There’s even a dedicated Butterfly Walk, where you can spot different species dancing through the woodland edges in warmer months. It’s gentle, colourful, and perfect for children learning about wildlife — or adults who just enjoy a quiet moment watching butterflies drift past.

This makes Holt Country Park a brilliant trip out for all ages, especially families who want a walk that naturally encourages little explorers to look, listen and notice the world around them.

A Wildlife Treat

Holt Country Park is full of quiet wildlife moments if you slow down and look:

  • Amphibian ponds where frogs, toads and newts thrive

  • A dedicated wildlife pond, perfect for spotting dragonflies, damselflies and pondlife in summer

  • Reptiles basking on warm logs and sandy patches (keep dogs close)

  • Birdlife everywhere — from woodland songbirds to woodpeckers and raptors

It’s a brilliant spot for kids and nature lovers, and there are plenty of places to pause and listen.

Family-Friendly Facilities

  • A children’s play area near the car park

  • Picnic spots dotted around the woodland edge

  • Hetty’s Tearoom for drinks, cakes and light bites — a lovely stop after your walk

Heading Out to Holt Lowes

Once you enter Holt Lowes from the country park, the landscape opens dramatically into the sandy, heather‑covered expanse of Holt Lowes — a rare lowland heath and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Dogs need to be on leads in this part as there are wild ponies and wildlife.

What Holt Lowes Actually Is

Holt Lowes is one of Norfolk’s most important heathland habitats, shaped by centuries of grazing and natural processes. It’s home to:

  • Heather and gorse

  • Rare reptiles like adders and common lizards

  • Ground‑nesting birds

  • Free‑roaming ponies that help manage the habitat

The contrast from the woodland is stunning — one minute you’re under a canopy of pines, the next you’re stepping into wide‑open heathland with huge skies.

How Far Can You Walk Here?

You can explore Holt Lowes for as little as 20 minutes or stretch it into a 1–2 hour wander depending on the paths you follow. Sandy tracks weave across the heath, linking back to the Country Park or looping around the Lowes itself.

It’s easy to tailor the distance to your day.

Dog Notes for the Lowes

Because of the ponies and ground‑nesting birds, dogs must stay:

  • On a lead or

  • Under very close control

Clemmie trotted politely beside me, though she did give the ponies a dramatic side‑eye.

Dog-Friendly Summary

  • Woodland = great for off‑lead exploring (if recall is solid)

  • Lowes = leads/close control due to wildlife and ponies

  • Plenty of shade in the woods

  • Bring water — the heath can get warm

  • No bins on the Lowes, so carry bags back

Why We Love This Walk

This walk is such a beautiful blend of Norfolk’s landscapes — woodland calm, heathland wildness, wildlife encounters and family‑friendly facilities all in one place. It’s peaceful, varied and perfect for dogs who love a mix of shade and open space.
